6th Grade Band
Starting in Fall 2020, 6th Grade Band at SMS is beginning band! 6th Grade Band is open to all incoming 6th grade students interested in learning a wind instrument and becoming part of the awesome band community in the Snoqualmie Valley School District and beyond.
Students in 6th Grade Band will focus on the fundamentals of reading music and playing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Students will develop skills in proper posture, playing position, tone production, music literacy, teamwork, and ensemble dynamics. Instruments available include flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, and percussion (by audition). 6th Grade Band performs in Fall, Winter, and Spring concerts. Details about instrument fittings, percussion auditions, and instrument rentals will be communicated home by email once the student registers. 7th Grade Band
7th Grade Band is open to students who have completed SMS 6th Grade Band or by audition and with permission from Mr. Alas.
7th Grade Band continues to build on the fundamental skills and techniques from 6th Grade Band including proper posture and playing position, characteristic tone production, music theory, and music literacy. New instruments and opportunities become available as students grow and progress. New instruments available to 7th Grade Band students include tenor and baritone saxophone, tuba, and bassoon. 7th Grade Band performs in the Fall, Winter, and Spring concerts, other community events as scheduled, as well as the first band trip! |
8th Grade Band
8th Grade Band is open to 8th grade students who have successfully completed SMS 7th Grade Band or by audition and with permission from Mr. Alas. 8th Grade Band is a time of tremendous growth and opportunity for band students. Fundamental skills continue to be developed, while also preparing students for successful musicianship in high school and beyond.
8th Grade Band performs in the Fall, Winter, and Spring concerts, as well as MSHS football and basketball games, regional festivals, school events and pep assemblies, elementary recruiting performances, and final band tours and community performances as scheduled. |
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is open to all SMS music students by audition. This is an advanced ensemble dedicated to learning and performing the great American art forms of Jazz and Swing. Jazz Band also explores other American and world music styles such as rock, funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazillion, and popular music from around the world. Jazz Band is open to saxophones, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drumset.
Jazz Band meets before school during zero hour and requires extra dedication, practice, and transportation arrangements. The Jazz Band performs at school concerts, assemblies, regional festivals, community events, and trips as scheduled. SMS jazz students have a special opportunity to study with Mr. Taylor, an award-winning jazz educator, and one day advance to the nationally-acclaimed Mount Si High School Jazz program.
